This short 2 days Chimpanzee tracking safari tour brings Chimpanzee trekking and other primates tracking in Kibale Forest National park.

This park is a home to over 1500 individual Chimpanzees and this makes Kibale forest the place with the highest concentration of Chimps in Africa.
Kibale forest national park is found in Uganda and it is a Primate heaven.

The park is a home to 13 primate species and these include; Chimps, Coppery-tailed money, Blue monkey, Vervet monkey, Black and White colobus monkey, Red tailed monkey, Red colobus monkey, Olive Baboon, Thick-tailed bushbaby, Lesser Galago, L’Hoest Monkey, just to mention.

Kibale national park is also a sanctuary for birds. The park is blessed with over 370 bird species providing an adventure for bird watching enthusiasts.

The park is also blessed with variety of flora, forest Elephants which can be seen on a lucky day and various species of butterflies.
Besides Kibale Forest National park, Chimpanzee tracking can also be done in Budongo forest and in Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

You can have Chimpanzee habituation Experience (CHEX) which takes place the whole day. You track the chimps and get to know how they live, build nests, play, nap, feed and so on.
According to Uganda Wildlife Authority latest tariffs, The adventure costs $220 for foreign non-residents, $200 for foreign residents and $70 for East Africans, while Chimpanzee trekking permit costs $200.

On the 2 days safari, you will have a swamp walk which provides a good opportunity to track over 8 primates and birds.

Full Itinerary

Day 1: Journey to Kibale Forest National Park and Swamp walk

In the morning after breakfast, our driver guide will pick you from your lodge/Hotel and take drive you to Kibale national park. The 2 days Chimp tracking safari starts today. The tour is short but not short of adventure.

Our driver will take you through towns of Mityana, Mubende, Kyenjojo and Fortportal towns. The journey is scenic with panoramic views of Tea, Banana plantations, beautiful landscapes, farmers attending to their lands, and this provides a great opportunity for photographs.

We proceed to Kibale and then check in at our lodge for dinner. In the evening we will go for a Swamp walk in Bigodi. The walk is very interesting, a mixture of nature walk and community interaction.

The walk through the swamp is a good opportunity for 8 primate species such as L’Hoest, Red-tailed Monkey, Red Colobus, Vervet Monkey, Mangabey etc, animals such as Sitatunga, Bushback, pigs etc, and birds over 250 species including; The great blue turaco, Black and White casqued hornbill, White browed coucal, Ross’s turaco, grew backed fiscal, African paradise flycatcher, to mention but a few.

After the adventure, we return to the lodge for dinner and await Chimpanzee tracking the next day.

 Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking and back to Kampala

Day 2 of the 2 days Chimpanzee tracking safari brings us the highlight of our tour. After an early breakfast, our guide will take you to Kanyanchu Visitor center for briefing and grouping. Your group of not more than 6 people will be given an ranger guide to lead you into the forest to track the Chimps.

Chimpanzee tracking can be a strenuous activity, you trek through the forest following the ranger and it can takes an average of 4 hours to locate the primates. The location of the chimps depends on the availability of fruits and food in the forest. You will hear the chants from the chimps from afar before getting to them.

The trek in the forest is generally simpler compared to Gorilla trekking because the terrain is flat allowing movement to be simple.

The trek through the forest also provide sights of other primates including; Coppery-tailed money, Blue monkey, Vervet monkey, Black and White colobus monkey, Red tailed monkey, Red colobus monkey, etc.

However, the these primates keep their distance from the Chimps.
After locating the Chimpanzees, you will spend 1 hour with them. Here you can take pictures and enjoy your time with the primates as they fight, feed, chant, slap trees, swing from branch to branch before trekking back out of the forest.

What You need for the 2 days Chimpanzee Tracking Safari in Kibale

  • Water: It is advisable to park a few water filtration tablets before you come for the trek.
  • Boots: You will need good waterproof comfortable shoes because some times it rains during the trek
  • Rain Jacket: You are advised to carry rain jacket in case it rains in Kibale forest
  • Snack: You can carry a light snack to give you some energy during the walk in the forest
  • Trouser and Shirts : Light trousers and long sleeved shirts are advised
  • Socks: You will have to tuck in the trousers into the socks to avoid insects crawling inside.
  • Gloves: You might need Gardening gloves because you will be grabbing tree branches, leaves, name it, and some can be thorny.
