Summary of the Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking Rwanda Safari
The 4 days tour takes you for primate tracking in the rain forests of Rwanda. We first go to Nyungwe forest National Park, which is the biggest rain forest in East Africa.
Here we go for Chimpanzee tracking and also a Canopy walk where you stand chances of seeing also other primates like; Mountain monkey, baboons, L’Hoest’s Monkeys, Blue Monkeys, Black and white Colobus, Angola colobus, Red-tailed Monkeys. The canopy walk is very scenic.
After the canopy and primate experience, we head to Volcanoes National Park, for the renown Mountain Gorilla Trekking and a cultural experience in Iby’lwacu cultural village.
Full Itinerary
Day 1: Genocide memorial and Transfer to Nyungwe for a Canopy walk
Our driver guide will be glad to receive you at the hotel or a place of your convenience, giving you a brief about the tour before guiding you through the city{Kigali} visiting the Genocide memorial.
We then transfer to Nyungwe forest and then settle in for a canopy walk in the evening.
Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking and Tea Plantation walk
After an early breakfast, we assemble at the park offices for briefing and grouping, it’s here where we pick the ranger guide who will lead you into the forest for the excursion.
Chimp tracking can be a little tough but very exciting when you meet the close cousins. Equipped with rain gears, enough drinking water and some snacks making the exercise smooth.
Upon meeting the chimpanzee you will have a complete hour with them. Return to the lodge after tracking.
In the evening, we can have a walk through Gisakura Tea Plantations for pictures and beautiful views.
Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Early in the morning, we check out of Nyungwe forest, and then start on the journey to Volcanoes National park in the north-west of Rwanda.
The journey through is very scenic and very adventurous. On reaching the park, we head for lunch and then in the evening, we can go for a community walk or visit Iby’lwachu cultural village.
Day 4: Gorilla Trekking and Transfer back to Kigali
Today you start the day early in the morning with breakfast and packed snacks. We drive to the park headquarters for briefing and knowing the group/ gorilla family you will be visiting.
The park authorities arrange the days visitors into groups before being led by the ranger guide in the forest for a lifetime Gorilla trekking in the forest.
The duration of trekking is not certain due to a lot of determinant factors which may include the gorilla movements as they search for food.
Upon finding the gorillas, you will then spend a quality hour with them before coming. After the activity, we checkout and transfer back to Kigali.

What You need during Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking
- Water: Gorilla trekking can be very tiresome and you need to refill your tank as the trek goes on. It is advisable to park a few water filtration tablets before you come for the trek.
- Boots: You will need good waterproof comfortable shoes. Some times it rains during the trek, so skid proof shoes can come in handy.
- Rain Jacket: You are advised to carry rain jacket because if rains very often in Volcanoes National park and Nyungwe Forest
- Snack: You can carry a light snack to give you some energy during the walk in the forest
- Trouser and Shirts The forest are covered with thick undergrowth, therefore light trousers and long sleeved shirts are advised.
- Socks: You will have to tuck in the trousers into the socks to avoid insects crawling inside.
- Gloves: You will need Gardening gloves because you will be grabbing tree branches, leaves, name it, and some can be thorny.
- Camera: Carry a good camera to capture this lifetime experience
