Its rolling grasslands and acacia savannah have time and again been captured on film with the movie “Out of Africa” being the most famous. Apart from the big five, the Maasai Mara is most famous for the annual migration of over a million wildebeest, zebra, gazelle etc. from the Serengeti in northern Tanzania crossing the Mara River into Kenya in search of fresh feeding grounds, which takes place in late July to September.
The reserve is also home to great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, zebras, and thousands of antelopes, impalas, and gazelles.

This changed when the top of the mountain collapsed in on itself, creating the biggest volcanic caldera in the world. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area spans vast expanses of highland plains, savanna, savanna woodlands and forests. Established in 1959 as a multiple land use area, with wildlife coexisting with semi-nomadic Maasai pastoralists practicing traditional livestock grazing, it includes the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest caldera.
The property has global importance for biodiversity conservation due to the presence of globally threatened species, the density of wildlife inhabiting the area, and the annual migration of wildebeest, zebra, gazelles, and other animals into the northern plains. The north of the Crater is, overall, much drier and consists of the open grasslands which characterize the Crater floor; this is where most of the resident game resides.

As you embark on your gorilla trekking adventure in Rwanda, it’s crucial to embrace responsible tourism practices to ensure the well-being of these magnificent creatures and the sustainability of the local communities.
One of the most important aspects of responsible tourism is respecting the guidelines and regulations set by the park authorities. This includes maintaining a safe distance from the animals, avoiding sudden movements, and strictly adhering to the one-hour time limit for your encounters. By following these rules, you can help minimize the impact on the gorillas and chimpanzees and ensure their continued protection.
Additionally, it’s essential to support conservation efforts by choosing reputable tour operators and lodges that prioritize sustainability and environmental stewardship. Look for companies that actively contribute to local communities, support anti-poaching initiatives, and invest in habitat restoration and wildlife monitoring programs.
During your interactions with the local communities, be mindful of cultural sensitivities and engage in respectful exchanges. Participate in community-based tourism activities, such as visiting local villages or supporting local artisans, to gain a deeper understanding of the region’s rich cultural heritage and to contribute directly to the well-being of the people.
By embracing responsible tourism practices, you can play a crucial role in preserving the delicate balance of the ecosystems and ensuring that the gorillas, chimpanzees, and local communities continue to thrive for generations to come.
Whether it rains or not, gorilla trekking will take place. However it is recommended to carry rain gear and trekker shoes so that movement becomes easier.
Gorilla trekking can take a period of 30 minute to 8 hours. This depends on the location and movements of the gorillas.
A maximum of 8 people in a group are allowed to trek and meet the gorillas.
When you meet the gorillas, you are allowed a maximum of 1 hour. You can take pictures however, note that flash is not allowed.
You are allowed a distance of 7 meters in presence of the mountain gorillas. You are not allowed to touch the mountain gorillas though there are rare cases when the gorillas touch humans. When this happens, you should not panic and you should know that the gorillas are always in control.
These animals are very gentle and they seem to ignore tourists in their presence. However, do not take this for granted. You a not allowed to make any rush movements, do not block the way between a mother and baby.
You should be in good physical condition. If you are sick or do not feel well, then it is recommended that you should not do the trekking. Trekking can be tiresome and sometimes it can take the whole day, therefore being physically fit comes in handy.
In case you want to ease your self, you should dig a hole of about 30 centimeters deep, and then cover the hole right after.
